Dust 514 narrative and beta structure designed to encourage player-driven stories

The saga of CCP Games' Dust 514, the PlayStation 3 first-person shooter component to the Eve Onlineuniverse, will continue with the release of its latest build in May, Uprising.

Uprising will launch just one month before the Odyssey expansion for Evewhich is designed to encourage players to once again explore the Eve universe. The release of Uprising alongside the expansion will be "that first step to real persistence and real meaning in Dust 514," according to vice president of business development Thor Gunnarsson.

Gunnarsson told Polygon that the ability to conquer planets, which will be added with Uprising, has been one of the most requested feature from players.

"This notion of introducing tactical and strategic gameplay, laying that over the core shooter experience ofDust, is what our fan base has been clamoring for since we first announced the game," he said. "It's been a [broadly requested] category, certainly from our Eve players, that they've wanted to see because it adds meaning to the Eve universe."

"With many first-person shooters you fight to the end of map, and that's it, and when you're done you go back and play the map again," added executive producer Jon Lander. "It doesn't really mean anything beyond that 50-minute session. But with Dust, if you win that battle, you win that ground and you can start building up your infrastructure."

According to CTO Halldor Fannar, console shooter players are "normally not in the same seat" as PC players, making the development of an experience for both kinds of gamers a challenge. He noted that CCP has been running Dust in open beta as a way for these traditional shooter players to test the game's mechanics and find their own way into Eve's world.

"Console game players go to the store and put down money for a box, and if they don't like it they can return it," he said. "We are running Dust in open beta not because it isn't done, but because we want to do it. We don't feel like this game is completely done. We want to hear what you think needs to be done. But players are already spending their money on it, so in a way it's already out."
Fannar said CCP will keep Dust 514 in open beta for a while in order to continue what he calls its "customer development phase.

"It's the way Eve has evolved, and we're taking that same method and applying it to the console game," he added.

The recent Caldari Prime conflict, a large-scale battle involving Dust 514 mercenaries and Eve ships, was the first in a series of in-game events set up to demonstrate the deep integration between Dust 514 and Eve Online. These events are designed to push players to create their own stories within the larger game narrative, where CCP has set up the framework for heroes and villains to be born. Gunnarsson called the lore CCP has set up Eve a "canvas" on which players paint their own tales.

"What we provide is the high-level background and setting, but the true stories, the real stories, are all player-generated and have nothing to do with us," he said. "We wanted to make the right kind of sandbox and give players the right kind of toolkit to make their own stories."

Lander noted that player-owned territories and large-scale battles are not regulated by CCP, but are entirely player-driven endeavors. The development team thinks of Eve as a real place driven by player interaction and contribution.

"Players spend a frightening amount of time playing this game," he said, "and it becomes an extension of themselves. We have to be very careful with that world, we can't just go around randomly jetting things into it. We need to find some sensible way to introduce new concepts, and this storyline for Dust 514 gives us the background with which to start. From there, it's purely up to the player."

"As we open the faucet more and more, we lose more control," Fannar added. "So we want to do that gradually, and ease people into it."

Fannar said CCP hopes to expand the world of Eve onto mobile, adding new experiences on smartphones and tablets sometime down the line.

"We want to give you a relevant experience that makes sense for you on those devices," he said, mentioning the ability to train and trade on smartphones while away from the console or PC as one major possibility. "We want to give that to you, but we're being very careful not to just pile all kinds of games into [Eve]. We want to preserve that sense of discovery."

"It's less our game; it's more players coming together to achieve something," added Lander.
Eve Online's next expansion, Odyssey, will be available on June 4. The Uprising build will hit Dust 514 on May 6.

When One is excited to get on Top

Gamers like me who loves PVP so much always works hard to get our character in to shape. Shape which means to have our own character unbeatable when it comes to PvP. Games that are really “good” for me are the games who are NOT pay-to-win. I mean here you are playing and you need to spend money to WIN? Please~.

One of the most anticipated games that has been release and till now is still on top is Guild Wars 2. Based from MMORPG.com Guild wars 2 is there top mmorpg of all time, these rating game from the users who voted for the game as well as the forum staffs. While in metacritic Guild Wars 2 got a total of 90 from 69 critics and having 8.0 from 2040 Ratings (users).

Based from the ratings that I've seen it made me think that it’s NEVER TO LATE to try out this game. The game is quite fun and addictive. There are lots of notable feature this game has, Platforming,  Underwater Combat, 5-Man Dungeons, vW Siege Weaponry, Character Personalities & Story Branching.

Guild wars 2 is really fun to play. However when you reached level 20 on wards you’ll start to realize the need of the equipments. Now since this game is not PAY-TO-WIN, everything you’ll be needing should be worked hard. This problem occur with my friends as we continue on trying level up our characters.

This got us thinking of IF there is someone who is willing to sell us GW 2 gold and we’ll just pay for his hard work, it would be nice. Gold will help us to get stronger and to fast level and attain the level we wanted to get on roll! And PVP is on our way!

Rift developer increases MMO retention through rewards

Retention rates for subscription based MMOs are a really hard thing to regulate. After all, why do you think so many of them drop their fee to go free-to-play?
Trion Worlds has somehow managed to survive the switch, and is still offering subscriptions. Due to a little imagination on their part, they've managed to increase the daily active user count by 470 percent by offering simple in-game rewards through the website Raptr.

The developer saw results in as little as a few weeks. One of the biggest ways they got people into the game is by offering a free copy of Rift with a one month subscription for reaching an "Experienced" rank playing other RPG games like Torchlight II. There's also an entirely different tiered system once you start playing Rift itself, that will net you free items.

I played Rift off and on for nearly two years now, and it's a great game. I haven't resubscribed in a while because I've moved on to many other MMOs, but every once and a while I enjoy going back and seeing what Trion Worlds has to offer.

Original EverQuest designer Brad McQuaid rejoins the team

Original EverQuest designer Brad McQuaid has rejoined the massively multiplayer online game's development team, according to McQuaid's recent post on the game's official forums.

His return to EverQuest comes after a 12-year absence and will allow him to work on features that date back to the 13-year-old MMO's launch.

"When I was given the opportunity to return to the team it was something I just had to do!" he wrote. "I started playing right away and got a paladin into his mid-30s. I found, in addition to all of the great new features and [user interface] elements, that the game, at its core, was still very much the [EverQuest] I was involved with. In fact, some of my first work as a game designer on the team will be working on areas that have been alluded to since launch. I can't say more than that, of course, but I'm sure you can imagine how exciting this is for me."

After McQuaid left the EverQuest team, he co-founded Sigil Games Online and helped develop the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes MMO. Sigil was purchased by Sony Online Entertainment, which also publishes EverQuest. It adopted a free-to-play model last year.

ArenaNet: No Guild Wars 2 expansions planned for now

With little over six months gone by since Guild Wars 2 launched, community members wonder of ArenaNet’s possible plans to open up additional tracts of Tyria and beyond. The arrival of more content and more powerful characters, gear, and monsters is something of an inevitability in the churn-prone MMORPG genre, but the studio appears content focusing on improving Guild Wars 2′s current offerings. Speaking to IGN, Director Colin Johanson states his team “doesn’t have a timetable” for developing an expansion.

“Expansions are definitely something that we’ll potentially look at in the future, but we don’t have a timetable on it,” Johanson says. “We’re open to it, but I think our major focus as a studio is making the living world concept as strong as possibly can for the players that we’ve got.”

That policy definitely shows through the game’s meaty patch updates typically bringing extra quest types, mini-games, PVP overhauls, and story arcs. When asked on the possibility of seeing a far-off Guild Wars 3, Johanson reiterated ArenaNet’s commitment to its current title.

“We want to be able to have teams developing new, innovative features that change the way you play our game and grow that experience so it feels like you don’t leave Guild Wars 2,” he explains. “Guild Wars 2 becomes Guild Wars 2.5 or Guild Wars 3 and it continues to grow.”

Here’s a couple of quick comparisons: Burning Crusade, World of Warcraft’s first expansion, appeared after Blizzard spent nearly three years adding and updating raids and PVP features in the vanilla content. Star Wars: The Old Republic’s first expansion, Rise of the Hutt Cartel, is now in closed and public testinga few months after the game celebrated its first anniversary.
